Bengaluru’s First Driverless Metro Train Passes Key Safety Inspection, Moves Closer to Launch

Bengaluru: Bengaluru’s Namma Metro has achieved a significant milestone with the successful inspection of its first driverless train by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on February 24, 2025. This inspection is a pivotal step toward the operationalization of the 19.15-kilometer Yellow Line, which extends from R.V. Road to Bommasandra, encompassing key areas such as Electronics City.

The prototype train, featuring six coaches, arrived at the Hebbagodi metro depot from China on February 14, 2024. Following its arrival, the train underwent extensive static and dynamic testing to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards. The CMRS inspection focused on evaluating the train’s advanced systems, including the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, which facilitates Unattended Train Operations (UTO).

In parallel, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has successfully coupled six domestically manufactured coaches at the Hebbagodi depot, forming the second driverless train set for the Yellow Line. These coaches, produced in collaboration with Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, are slated to undergo rigorous testing in the coming weeks.

The introduction of driverless trains is anticipated to enhance the efficiency of Bengaluru’s metro system by reducing headways between trains, thereby offering commuters a more reliable and swift transit experience. Initially, these trains will operate with drivers during a transitional phase to ensure a seamless integration of the new technology. Full driverless operations will commence upon the completion of all requisite safety assessments and certifications.

The successful deployment of this technology will position Bengaluru as the second city in India to implement driverless metro trains, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s urban transit infrastructure.
