Kash Patel Sworn in as FBI Chief, Takes Oath on Bhagavad Gita

In a historic ceremony on February 21, 2025, Kash Patel was sworn in as the ninth Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), marking the first time an Indian-American has held this prestigious position. Emphasizing his cultural heritage, Patel took his oath on the Bhagavad Gita, the sacred Hindu scripture, during the event at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C.
Administered by U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, the ceremony was attended by President Donald Trump, Patel’s family, and close associates. Patel’s girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, held the Bhagavad Gita as he recited the oath. Following the swearing-in, Patel expressed his gratitude and highlighted his journey as a testament to the American dream. “I am living the American dream, and anyone who thinks it’s dead, look right here. A first-generation Indian is now leading the greatest law enforcement agency in the world. That can’t happen anywhere else,” he remarked.

President Trump praised Patel’s appointment, stating, “One of the reasons I chose Kash is because of the tremendous respect agents have for him. I think he’ll go down as the best ever in that position.” Trump emphasized Patel’s strong leadership qualities and the confidence he inspires within the agency.
Patel’s confirmation by the Senate was narrowly secured with a 51-49 vote, reflecting the polarized political climate. Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joined all Democrats in opposing the nomination, citing concerns over Patel’s previous political advocacy and its potential impact on the FBI’s impartiality.
In his inaugural address as FBI Director, Patel pledged to uphold the Constitution and ensure accountability within the bureau. He stated, “There will be accountability within the FBI and outside of it, and we will do it through rigorous constitutional oversight.” Patel also addressed previous media portrayals, describing them as “fake, malicious, slanderous, and defamatory,” and urged the public to support the dedicated men and women of the FBI.
Patel’s career includes roles as a public defender, a trial attorney in the Justice Department’s National Security Division, and various positions during President Trump’s first term, such as senior counsel on counterterrorism for the House Intelligence Committee and chief of staff to the acting Secretary of Defense. His appointment as FBI Director is expected to bring significant changes to the bureau, focusing on reducing political biases and enhancing its core mission of enforcing justice fairly and without bias.
As he embarks on this new role, Director Patel faces the challenge of navigating the FBI through a complex political landscape while striving to restore public trust and uphold the agency’s integrity.
