MK Stalin Urges Tamil Nadu Couples to Have More Children Amid Delimitation Concerns

Chennai : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has made a surprising appeal to newlyweds and young couples in the state, urging them to have children without delay. His remarks come in response to the proposed delimitation exercise, which could alter the state’s political representation based on population figures.
Speaking at a wedding event in Nagapattinam, Stalin emphasized that Tamil Nadu’s commitment to population control has put the state at a disadvantage. He pointed out that while other states with higher population growth could gain more parliamentary seats, Tamil Nadu and other southern states that have successfully implemented family planning policies may see their representation shrink.

“ Earlier, we advised couples to take their time before having children. But now, we can’t say that anymore. If parliamentary seats are determined by population size, then we must act accordingly,” Stalin stated, underscoring his concerns that Tamil Nadu’s 39 Lok Sabha seats could be reduced.
The Chief Minister’s comments highlight the growing apprehension among southern states over the delimitation process. Stalin has been vocal in his opposition, arguing that rewarding states with unchecked population growth while penalizing those that have controlled their numbers is unfair.
In light of the issue, Stalin has convened an all-party meeting on March 5 to discuss the implications of the proposed delimitation and strategize a unified response. He urged all political factions to put aside differences and come together in the interest of Tamil Nadu’s political future.

His remarks have sparked widespread debate, with political analysts noting the shift in messaging from family planning to concerns over political representation. While some view his statement as a strategic move to draw attention to the unfairness of the proposed exercise, others question whether a call for increased births is the right solution.

As Tamil Nadu prepares to take a firm stance against the delimitation proposal, Stalin’s remarks signal a broader battle ahead over the future of the state’s voice in national politics.
