 Rekha Gupta: From Student Leader to Delhi’s Chief Minister

Rekha Gupta, born on July 19,1974, in Julana, Haryana, has been a prominent figure in Indian politics, particularly within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Her political journey began during her college years at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University, where she joined the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad(ABVP) in 1992. Demonstrating leadership and commitment, she was elected ad the President of the Delhi University Student’s Union (DUSU) for the 1996-97 term.

Transitioning from student politics to municipal governance, Gupta served as a councillor for North Pitampura in 2007 and was re-elected in 2012. Her tenure in municipal administration was marked by her focus on community development and public welfare. She also held significant positions within the BJP, including National Secretary of the Yuva Morcha from 2002 to 2005 and General Secretary of the Deelhi BJP Mahila Morcha.

In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Gupta contested from the Shalimar Bagh constituency. She secured a decisive victory, defeating the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Bandana Kumari, by a margin of 29,595 votes. This win not only marked a personal milestone for Gupta but also signified the BJP’s resurgence in Delhi after a 27-year hiatus.

On feb 20,2025, Rekha Gupta was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi at a ceremony held at Ramlila Maidan. Her appointment is historically significant, as she becomes the fourth woman to hold the Chief Minister’s office in Delhi. The event was attended by prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, underscoring the importance of this political transition.

Gupta’s ascent to the Chief Minister’s position reflects her decades-long dedication to public service and her ability to navigate the complexities of political life. Her journey from a student leader to the highest executive office in Delhi serves as an inspiration, highlighting the impact of persistent effort and commitment to societal development. As she assumes office, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has outlined a comprehensive agenda focusing on key issues such as the cleaning of the Yamuna river, infrastructure development, and women’s welfare initiatives. Her leadership is anticipated to bring a renewed focus on governance and public service in the national capital.
