Sudanese Military Plane Crashes Near Khartoum, Causing Multiple Fatalities

Sudan: On February 26, 2025, a Sudanese military aircraft, identified as an Antonov model, crashed shortly after takeoff from Wadi Seidna Air Base, located approximately 22 kilometers north of Khartoum. The incident resulted in the deaths of all crew members on board, including several high-ranking officers, and caused fatalities and injuries among civilians on the ground.

Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft was flying at a low altitude before it suddenly descended and erupted into flames in a densely populated area. The crash led to significant damage to nearby homes and caused power outages in several surrounding neighborhoods.

Medical sources from Al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman confirmed receiving multiple casualties, including at least five deceased civilians and several individuals with injuries sustained from the crash.

Preliminary reports suggest that a technical malfunction may have been the cause of the accident. A military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the aircraft experienced a technical fault during takeoff, leading to the tragic event.

This incident occurs amidst ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has been ongoing since April 2023. The prolonged strife has resulted in significant loss of life and displacement within the region.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash and to assess the full extent of the damage.
